This weekend I am supposed to be taking part in a tournament of Underwater hockey ( yes you read right). It’s a sport I am being reintroduced to after 20 years, and I am super excited. But, I am have been worried because I have had a damaged wrist for a few weeks and have been undergoing intensive physiotherapy to put it right. It doesn’t look like my wrist will be fit to play, and so I have been lining myself up to play anyway and deal with the consequences later, I don’t want to let the team down either. Let’s face it this is madness, facing future injury just for a few games.
The interesting thing about wrists is most of us have two, and it occurred to me yesterday what if I could try and play with my left. Playing with the “wrong” hand is not as easy as it seems it’s like trying to write with your non-dominate hand or kick a ball with the wrong foot.
So I gave it a go. While on the first occasion it felt odd to me and there was a difference in performance my skill level was still acceptable, and I realised could only get better. I remember my father used to be left-handed and he was forced at school to become right-handed because of a social stigma around left-handed people.
As I was making my veg juice this morning, I was wondering where this was showing up in my business and life. Areas, I was not willing to go to and develop because I never gave them a chance or I was stuck doing what I always did.
As times are getting tougher, I see some companies taking their sales teams who have been playing with their “right hand’ hand only and introducing them to networking as a strategy. This new skill is developing the “left hand.”
I would love to hear from anyone who has had success in a new area.
